A lovely day in the neighborhood

June 8, 2009 by Lisa Beth

Mother nature is a cruel, heartless woman this year.  Bismarck this winter was awful- more snow on record than ever in history, along with record low temperatures (can you say -42 degrees?). This spring has been cold, wet and cloudy. This weekend, a lovely June weekend, it was 36 degrees out and sleeting. Sleeting in June. Absurd.

Of course, Chris saw this weekend as the perfect opportunity to fish all weekend on the river.  Crazy, right? Now this is one of the reasons I KNOW that women are smarter than men (insert, I am smarter than Chris).  No woman would be caught dead fishing in the pouring rain/sleet for over 8 hours, by choice.  Now, there are some circumstances I can see when a woman might go fishing in the rain for an hour or so.

a) The woman is courting a man who is going fishing and wants to make him think this is the sort of thing she does for fun. These outings, of course, will end once the man proposes marriage.

or

b) The woman is clinically insane.

Chris came back shivering and his teeth chattering, needing to take hot shower at least twice.  “Was it worth it? Did you fulfill the quest of the Walleye?” I asked.  I mean really, it’s not like he can’t go fishing EVERY OTHER DAY.  Crazy, I tell you.  Either that, or my theory of females being superior to the male species has been right all along…. HA!

So with a long weekend of indoor activities planned, I decided to bring the kids to Hobby Lobby for a quick trip. I needed some paper to finish a project I’m doing in Wyatt’s room and I wanted him to help me pick it out.  As I was bundling the kids up to go back to the car when we were done shopping, some guy walks by us and says just loud enough to make sure I heard him, “What kind of people bring their kids out in this weather?” Um, excuse me?  Remember February negative forty-two below?  It’s seventy-eight degrees warmer than that, and we had to leave the house then sometimes too. Do you expect us to sit in our house the ENTIRE year? The NERVE! Had I not been such a mild-mannered, polite young woman, I may have snapped something nasty back at him.  That, or I was too busy corralling two children back out into the sleet.
