He Sleeps with a Teddy Bear

Every time we start a new daycare/preschool there are these long forms you need to fill out. (We should have this memorized by now!) Three pages long. And it’s the same everywhere, so it must be a universal form to torture parents.  There are some sections of it that always make me chuckle when I am filling out the paperwork. Our paper usually look something like this:

Last Vaccinated: He is on schedule with his vaccinations, see records (like why even ask if you require vaccination records to be turned in at the same time???)

List any fears you child may have: None. My child is fearless

List any foods your child likes: Mac and cheese. Hot dogs. Apples and cheese. That’s it. Oh, and milk, is that considered a food?

List any foods your child dislikes: Any foods except those listed above. Especially vegetables. Don’t put anything green on his plate, please.

Does your child have any favorite toys? (ie: security blanket, teddy bear, etc.) No. My child has attachments to nothing. Not even his own parents.

So, the last question brings me to the point of this post.  Lately, Wyatt HAS been sleeping with a teddy bear at night.  And a LEGOS magazine.  He has become quite attached to both of them.  Did I already write about the LEGOS magazine?   Well, if I haven’t mentioned it, it is 80 pages of things you can buy.  Some LEGO sets are available that cost hundreds of dollars. Yes, hundreds. Of course, those are the ones he wants, but that’s another story.  Anyway, he takes this magazine to sleep with him, reads it a little before bed, and falls asleep with it under his pillow.  When he wakes up in the morning, he grabs teddy and his magazine and heads out to the kitchen for breakfast and Sponge Bob.

Now, the magazine, I understand.  Wyatt LOVES looking at toy catalogs and letting us (loudly) know what he would like. But the teddy bear, I am a little surprised about.  He has had many, many stuffed animals over the years, all of which he has not given a second glance. They are all in his sister’s room now, hoping to get played with someday.  But for some reason, this teddy bear is different.  And the funny thing? It isn’t even a teddy bear we bought, or was given to him as a gift. This teddy bear was hand made by the women’s axillary up in Minot.  Two summers ago when Wyatt fell down those stairs and had to go to Minot for the CT scan, the ER nurse gave it to him, and told us their axillary makes these teddys for kids in the hospital. I remember thinking, Great, another teddy bear to clutter his room. And up until lately, that is kind of what teddy has done.  I actually have no idea where Wyatt found him, I thought I had put all the stuffed animals away due to non-interest.  But one day he appeared.

Wyatt calls him”Teddy”, and if Teddy is not in bed at bedtime, oh boy will we hear about it.  Then I’m usually running around the house searching for the lost bear so my kid will go to sleep and I can have some peace before my bedtime.  Teddy has his own pillow and blanket right next to Wyatt and he gets tucked in every night. Give Teddy a kiss, too, Mom! The other night, I laid Brooklyn down for the night, and as I was walking past Wyatt’s door, I heard a whisper, Mom, come in here! I peeked into his room and there was Wyatt sitting in his bed, cradling Teddy like a baby “feeding” him with his empty water glass.  Teddy was hungry! And he cry, so I feed him!

Just when you think kids aren’t paying attention, you realize just how much of it is sinking in.
