Here we go again….

October 2, 2009 by Lisa Beth

Well, it’s official. Wyatt is getting kicked out of his 3rd school/daycare.  Only this time – wait for it – it’s because he’s TOO GOOD!!  Wyatt started in BECEP last winter when he turned three due to speech impairment and , um, behavior issues.  His new teachers this fall really haven’t had any problems with him so they decided to do some testing on him to see where he is at, socially, emotionally and with his speech.  Let’s just say, in quite a few areas, he tested at a 6 or 7 year old level.  Probably doesn’t need special education anymore, huh?

He will be attending his “special school” for one more week, then it’s back to daycare/preschool full time. Actually, Wyatt couldn’t be more ecstatic.  He really grew to love his “new school” (daycare) this summer, and was actually not too happy about going back to BECEP.  He’s adjusted, but now we are going to move him around AGAIN.  Although this time around, I have a feeling he will actually not resist the change. (YIPEE!)

You see, every time that Wyatt was moved to a different daycare/preschool setting, it was never really on good terms.  He would be having behaviors (we believe due to his big speech impairment), they would ask us to find some where else to take him, and we would abruptly have to take him to a new place again.  Each new place, I explained why we were leaving the last place and they always seemed so confident they could handle it. Yeah, not so much.  At his current daycare/preschool, we actually found a place where the people CAN HANDLE a child that does not fit into the typical cookie-cutter-kid mold.  In the beginning, I remember walking in to pick him up each day and kind of cringing when they would open their mouths, fearing that what was going to come out would be somewhere along the lines of Sorry, he’s just too much of a handful for us. Find somewhere else. In actuality, what they said was more like Well, he had a rough patch in his day today, but it’s nothing we can’t deal with.  We’ve had worse! I almost fell over backwards.  For so long, I was convinced that our son was the “worst” – I mean you can’t help feeling like that when time and time again you are told by daycare providers that they just couldn’t deal with him. Maybe we were just at the wrong places, and needed to learn the hard way, but it was just such a relief to find a place with people there that were willing to give your kid a CHANCE, and not always focus of the negative behavior.  Because, let’s face it, there IS GOING TO BE some negative behavior with two-to-three year old children.  Yes, Wyatt was an extreme case at times, but they didn’t see that. They saw a sweet kid who, deep down, just needed some extra help.

So, even though he is being “kicked out” of another place, I believe this time it is for good reasons, and we truely have seen a change in Wyatt’s behavior and personality. He almost a completely different kid – capable of showing his emotions and talking to us about them, instead of whacking us when we couldn’t understand what he was telling us.  He is now able to express himself better (not perfectly, but BETTER) and so his outbursts/aggressive behaviors have really gone almost completely away.  It’s a good day in the Hustad household!

That’s so awesome that he has done so well there that he has graduated :) I keep hoping someone will just “get” my Bean even tho she’s not your average kiddo, behavior-wise, and it’s such a struggle. She’ hasn’t gotten kicked out (yet), but she’s definitely pushing the limits.

    Yay Wyatt!

That is awesome news. And you are really blessed to have found a place that acknowledges the negatives, but focuses on the positives. In my opinion, that is a sign of a truly great teacher. Best of luck to Wyatt in his new school situation.
