I Love Coffee

I think it all started with a Swiss Orange Mocha from Gloria Jean’s Coffee.  YUMMMM.  I remember it well. I was with my mother and instead of getting my normal hot chocolate, I ordered that mocha.  My mom is a “coffee junkie” and insists on stopping at pretty much every coffee shop we drive by.  In fact, on a recent trip to Wisconsin together, I had to reign her in from stopping at a third Caribou Coffee on our way home. “Let’s just get home!” I yelled.  Sorry mom, had I not been so early in my pregnancy with Brooklyn, I probably would’ve stopped.  Hormones and no caffeine = BAD NEWS.

I really only started drinking coffee about 2 years ago.  Before coffee, there was daily diet coke, then foo-foo coffee drinks, now hard core coffee (with creamer of some sort, of course).  In high school and early college I rarely drank soda, or caffeine of any kind (unless mixed with an alcoholic beverage).  In college, my friend Laci would tell me that she could always tell if I happened to drink a pop before class  because I wouldn’t quit moving the entire class. My leg bounced all over, I tapped my pencil on my desk, and pretty much suffered from A.D.D. all day.  Oh how times have changed.

My demise, I believe, started when I began working at Med Center One. Every morning around 930 am, we took our morning break. Everyone would grab their coffee cup and head down to the cafeteria.  I felt left out, so I started buying a diet coke for the break. One diet coke a morning turned into one in the afternoon also, then one during work too, then maybe one at home in addition when I’d get done with work. So now we are up to 4 diet cokes in a day.  Now the A.D.D. would kick in if I DIDN’T have the diet coke.  See how addiction works people???

When I became pregnant with Wyatt and Brooklyn I quit cold turkey both times. Man, did those first few months drag.  By the middle of each pregnancy I was slowly integrating caffeine back into my diet (only at safe levels for pregnancy, of course). After Wyatt was born, I discovered the joy of “doctored up coffee” as my mother calls it.  Mochas, lattes, you name it, I’ll drink it.  Pretty soon I started realizing how fast a $5 cup of coffee each day could add up.  Chris suggested I start buying coffee and making it at home.  This is good, but every once and a while, I need my foo-foo drink.   Sometimes my day just doesn’t seem complete without Gloria Jean’s.

I would really love a Grande Foo Foo drink of some sort right now WITH Caffeine of course. But Panera makes a rather delightful de-caf carmel frozen coffee thing-a-ma-jig that just about satisfies my craving for the real deal. I was actually thinking of stopping off there after my doctors appointment today. Now I have been pushed over the edge to stop immediately after they whip those NST belts off my belly! Thanks for the (not so gentle) push, L.B.
