I Might Be in Trouble with This One…

October 24, 2009 by Lisa Beth

Wyatt has always been a very cautious child.  It has only been recently that he has become even the teeniest tiniest bit daring.  I’m talking he went down two steps without holding onto the railing. WOW.  Oh yeah, and I did catch him scaling the treadmill the other day.  It shocked me so much I screamed at him GET DOWN! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU DON’T CLIMB THINGS! It frightened him so much, I haven’t seen him up there again.  I’ve heard stories from other mothers with little boys and boy do they scare me. Things like, My two year old was found on the hood of my car climbing up the windshield onto the roof. Of a Ford F150. Or, My 18 month old decided he was thirsty, so he climbed up the chair, onto the counter top, opened the cupboard and was climbing towards the ceiling when we found him. These thing frighten me.  But we’ve never had to worry about Wyatt.  He still prefers to hold your hand when climbing stairs, and when the other kids are jumping off the top of playground equipment, he jumps off the curb and calls it good.

He recently started going to the gymnastics gym at daycare one day a week, and I blame this new found daring-ness on that.  Now, instead of jumping off the curb, he’ll balance on it on one foot first.  I know, it’s not much.  But for Wyatt, it’s a lot.  Our other spawn, however, I think we may have a different story.

The other day we were downstairs playing guitar hero (by the way-is it normal for a three year old to get up to 52% of the notes RIGHT on this game? SERIOUSLY? He’s better than some adults I’ve seen play at our house.), and Brooklyn got a hold of the remote somehow and began changing channels on us.  That’s funny, I thought, I swear I put that up on the couch.  So I took it from her (KICK! SCREAM! GIVE THAT BACK!!!!!) and placed it up on the couch.  One minute later, she had it again.  So apparently she is pulling up on the sofa (and stealing things) now. GREAT.

Besides the pulling up onto her knees, this girl has no fear. She’s determined to take a header down our LONG staircase.  Like 15-stairs-down-staircase.  It was easier to keep the gate closed when Wyatt was a baby ‘cuz, see, we didn’t have this three year old running the house at that time.  But she is attracted to the stairs like a moth to a flame.  Even with the gate securely shut, she presses her face up against the bars and hangs her legs over the first stair (under the gate), shaking the gate with all the fury in the world.

She is also set on picking up the dog dishes and chucking them around the kitchen, or dropping them on her head.  Now, when Wyatt was little, had he dropped one of those heavy, ceramic dishes on his head, he would not have done it again. Learn from you mistakes, child.  Brooklyn has done it half a dozen times this week.  She usually laughs. It can’t feel good.

Today, I had her in her exersaucer and I ran to the bathroom real quick. I heard a crash and a scream, then silence.  I quickly darted back into the family room. Sure enough, somehow she managed to climb OUT of the exersaucer, land on her head on the floor, and was just laying there with a develish grin on her face when I got the the room. Like, Yes, yes, I have figured out the escape from this contraption…

What kind of 9 month old baby figures out how to get out of an exersaucer?

Apparently, mine.
