Like a Ton of Bricks

Last night, an unusually loud thunder storm came through Bismarck. You know, one of those ones where the lightening lasts for 5-10 seconds, and the thunder is so loud the pictures on your walls shake. I am awakened by these storms well before they are even directly over us. I usually hear them coming when they are in Dickinson (100 miles away). That’s because I am the LIGHTEST SLEEPER IN THE WORLD. My husband and children, however, are not.
No one but me was even aware of the severe thunder storm last night. Me and the dogs, I guess. Chris and I even talked about the thunder, and Mia’s current state of distress over the storm, around 3 am. He remembers none of it. How wonderful would it be to sleep so soundly night after night, that you do not remember full conversations? Good for the sleeper, not so good for their children. When Wyatt was an infant, I begged Chris one night in the wee hours to go feed him a bottle, I had already been up so many times. He didn’t say a word, got up and headed to the nursery. That was easy, I thought. As I lay in bed, Wyatt did not quit crying. I waited a bit, then peeked into the nursery to see what was going on. There I found Chris standing, staring into the crib while Wyatt wailed away.
“Uh, what are you doing?” I asked.
“Feeding the baby,” he replied.
“For real?” I questioned.
“Feeding the baby,” he stated again still staring blankly into the crib.
“Go back to bed, and never come in here again,” I calmly instructed.
He remembers none of this. Scary? Yes. Believable? Maybe. Some may think he was doing this just to get out of night feedings. I think not. Had you stared into those blank eyes that night…you’d just know. He was sleepwalking. There were also the episodes that occurred before we had children. Like the time I woke up to Chris sitting up in bed shooting at geese. Picture an “air guitar” but more like an “air gun” shooting at imaginary birds in the sky.
So, apparently both of my children have inherited their father’s ability to sleep through tornadoes, hurricanes and thunderstorms. I peeked in on both of them near the end of the storm last night, and they were both softly snoring away. Unphased. I guess I will have to stay up during the storms by myself the rest of my life. ‘Cuz my entire family sleeps ….like a ton of bricks.
**Side note – the picture on the home page that goes with this blog is Wyatt when he was about 10 months old. Brooklyn wears PINK, people!**
