Questionable Parenting

Isn’t “pregnancy brain” supposed to end after you have had the baby? For those unfamiliar with this term, “pregnancy brain” refers to pregnant women who can’t seem to think straight during their pregnancy. I think it is because all of your blood flow is focused in your uterus, leaving no circulation left for your brain. Seriously, there may be scientific evidence behind my theory. Things like forgetting people’s names that you speak with daily, placing you car keys in the fridge (done it!), and driving aimlessly past your destination are just a few symptoms.
Just two weeks ago I went to the pharmacy where I work to fill a few prescriptions for myself and Chris (three to be exact). Now, being a pharmacist this should be no problem, right? I was completely overwhelmed by the daunting task of filling three prescriptions. I finally had to have another pharmacist come and help me. Five years of training down the tubes.
I find myself wanding around the house wondering what I was looking for. Once this week I was trying to get out the door in the morning and had to make 5 trips from the car back into the house because I kept forgetting things. Twice I made it halfway down the driveway and had to pull back in the garage. By the fifth time I was fuming. Once I reached my destination, I realized I had still forgotten something.
The worst episode of “post-pregnancy brain” happened last week. After a doctor’s appointment I picked Wyatt up from school and headed home. Once home, I grabbed the diaper bag, Wyatt’s backback, my purse, got Wyatt out of the car and headed into the house. While walking up the stairs in the garage, Wyatt turned to me and said, “Go get Brookin Mom!” I had left her in the car. Yikes. Good thing I have a three year old to keep me in line. Now, I know I would’ve remembered shortly after entering the house, but this lapse in my brain was scary. Am I now one of those moms who leave their kids in the car by accident? Holy cow. Don’t worry, I haven’t done it since and don’t plan on it anytime soon. I’ve started doing brain teasers at night to help the blood flow back. Wish me luck!

Hmmm…maybe it’s the fourth trimester thing I’ve heard about? And therefore you are still entitled to have pregnancy brain?
Also, now I’m a little scared that my spacy-ness won’t get better in the next couple months! I suppose that is what sleep deprivation can do to a person…
