Teeth are oh-so-very-important

August 9, 2009 by Lisa Beth

Last week I snapped some shots of Chris and Brooklyn.  As I was going through the hundreds thousands of pictures I have taken this year in preparation for a scrapbooking weekend I have coming up, I noticed that I really don’t have too many of daddy and his little girl.  So when we left the house for the “big slide park” one evening I (of course) grabbed my camera, and told Chris to bring his tooth along.

Does that last sentence make sense? What is she talking about? Bring your tooth? HUH?

Last winter, Chris came home one evening explaining that he had bitten into an ice cream sandwich and his tooth fell out.  Not one of the front ones, but one of the “side front” ones. If you have seen The Hangover, it’s that tooth. Yeah, that one. We actually went to see that movie a month or so back and every time that guy would smile the entire theater would burst out laughing, because he looked so ridiculous.  I kept peering at Chris like yes, you look that ridiculous too. ANYWAY – years back, Chris had all of his front teeth knocked out playing basketball or something and so all four front teeth are bridges.  I sent him immediately to the dentist as I could not look at him without cracking up.  Nothing he would say could be taken seriously. I mean really.

The dentist fixed him up, but warned him that it was probably a temporary fix as the bridge that he currently has for his teeth is an old style and they don’t last much more than 10-15 years, and well, Chris and I have been together almost 15 years now and he has always had teeth. Until recently, that is.

So, that temporary fix lasted a month or so, then it fell out again, she re-fixed it, explaining that this would be the last time she would put it back and that next time it fell out, which it inevitably would, he would need an implant.  One week before I was scheduled to have Brooklyn, it fell out again.  I told him to go back to that dentist and beg on hands and knees if needed to put that tooth back in. I was not going to go have this baby with a toothless husband. No sir – having a baby is stressful enough.  My husband WILL have all of his teeth present for the birth thank you very much.  Our dentist is a woman and I think she understood my desperation or sensed my 39 week pregnant craziness, ‘cuz it was fixed the next day.

Of course it did fall out again, so we are going to have the get an implant, but in the mean time, he has this silly retainer with a tooth in it, so when he is in public, he can be normal.  However, Chris being Chris, he does not like the retainer (“I wore retainers my entire childhood – I’m done with them!”) and refuses to wear it most times.  Even when I do get him to put it in, it is pretty short lived.  Sigh…..

I can’t have  toothless husband.  I just can’t do it.

So, the implant is still trying to be worked out. It’s a lot of money and our insurance doesn’t cover it. (Truth be told, I’d probably take out a second mortgage if necessary, but it’s not THAT expensive) So of course, Mr. Thrifty is not too keen on scheduling the appointment. Plus there’s the whole drilling into his bone thing too.  Ouch.  I told him to ask for gas. He’ll be fine.

I’m seriously hoping he’ll come around and just schedule the procedure already. Because the scary thing is, I’m getting used to looking at him with a missing front tooth.  I just don’t like where this is going, ya know? Maybe I’ll just give our dentist a call myself.  She seems like a reasonable woman. Perhaps she makes house calls…..

I’m with you, teeth are so important. In fact, it’s the first “physical” thing I notice when I meet someone. I’m sure it will all work out and yes, go for the gas! What cute pictures. I just love daddy and daughter pictures. They are the BEST!
