The Itsy Bitsy Spider

May 31, 2009 by Lisa Beth

Late last week, Chris and I decided to take the kids out for a leisurely evening of fishing on the river.  We packed up our gear and hauled the boat down to the Missouri River.  On the drive there, Wyatt was chanting/singing in his usual way.  Many run on sentences, many different thoughts all strung together, normal for him.  All of the sudden, I started actually listening to what he was saying…

“Cute spider. Look at the spider.  He’s so cuutttteee. Oh, spider’s tickling meee! Cute spideeerrr!”

I turned around and noticed that between his pointer finger and thumb, he was holding something black. Upon further inspection, I saw it’s legs wiggling in his grasp. Upon even further inspection, I saw that it was NOT a spider.

It was a wood tick.

I instantly freaked out, and screamed at Chris to “get it”!  “I’m driving! You get it!” was his response. So I turned around with a Kleenex and instructed Wyatt to drop it in the Kleenex. Of course he dropped it on his shirt and I practically flew into the back seat to go on tick patrol.  I found it, thank goodness, no harm done.

It’s great that Wyatt is a “true boy” I guess.  I always have someone at home with me to flush bugs down the toilet when I’m freaked out over them.  Wyatt captures them with his little fingers, goes to the toilet, flushes and waves to the bugs as they swirl down saying, “Bye bug! See you later!”  I don’t, however, like the fact that he really has no fear of ANY kind of bugs.  None at all. I’ve seen him try to pick up a big, nasty cricket outside before. YUCK! Boys will be boys, I guess.

I am glad that Wyatt is not afraid of bugs for his Mommy’s sake. I too hate bugs with a passion and am so lucky Molly has never had a tick! You were so brave to go on tick patrol. I think I would have made Jeff pull over! Kudos to Wyatt for being so creative to even make up his own song about the little critter. He is a TRUE BOY!
