Things Remembered and Lessons Learned
February 5, 2009 by Lisa Beth
There are a few things that slipped my mind about having a newborn in the house, and a couple of bits of information that have learned so far this time around. I thought I’d share…
Things Remembered:
1. Umbilical cord stumps are gross. Yucky.
2. First baths at home are very stressful for moms and dads. Babies cry through the whole thing.
3. Babies smell so good after a bath.

After our first bath at home, Wyatt was our helper
4. Baby smiles melt your heart every time, even if it is just gas.
5. Babies can accumulate a bigger wardrobe than you in just one week.
6. I tend to nest after the baby is born. I feel the need to be crafty when baby gets home.

I made two of these blankets a couple of nights after I got home.
7. Watching Chris care for our babies makes me love him more and more every day.

8. I am an even lighter sleeper (if this is possible) when a newborn is in the house.
9. Broken sleep is the worst kind. I would rather sleep for 4 hours straight and then get up, than have 9 hours of interrupted sleep.
10. Having a newborn around makes you appreciate and love your parents (and in-laws!) even more.

Lessons Learned:
1. Pink is awesome.

2. When the baby cries at 5 am, your three year old wakes up and is crabby for the rest of the day.
3. Girl poopy diapers are much harder to change… you gotta get all the poop out of all the appropriate places very carefully.
4. You CAN love your second child as much as you love your first. I wasn’t sure it was possible, but it totally is.
5. Each baby is totally different. Examples: Wyatt was a horrible eater, Brooklyn eats like a horse. Wyatt couldn’t poop, Brooklyn poops every hour. (Are these two related? Possibly – another revelation)
6. Planned c-sections ARE easier to recover from. I did NOT believe my doctor when she told me this.
7. Two kids ARE twice the work, if not more. I thank God for my great support system.
8. Baby girl toes may be yummier to kiss than baby boy toes.

9. Having a bigger house makes being at home 24/7 with your lovable husband much more dooable.
10. Dads are good at shopping for PINK clothes. Chris has never bought Wyatt a single article of clothing, but 3 hours after Brooklyn was born, Chris returned to the hospital with a large bag full of very pink items.

I’m nervous about the umbilical cord stump. How long does it hang around?
Love the baby feet picture. So cute!

Usually only about a week or two. The worst part is cleaning it 3-4 times daily. It’s black and nasty (from the dye they put on it). But as you’ll find, it’s one of the many nasty things you’ll experience as a mom… all well worth it, however.

I love reading your blog, Lisa. It helps make up for missing our daily chats when you are working. And… you are absolutely right. Little Brooklyn is a doll.

Lisa,i remember early morning feedings, sitting in the living
room and watching my neighbors going to work. I thought life
was so unfair they got a whole night sleep and i got nothing.
