Wonder-Boy-Genius

I really, really, really never wanted to be one of those moms who brags about how smart her child is, then when you look over at her kid, he is sitting in a pile of dirt eating boogers.  I really don’t want to be her.  But I have to say it.  I think Wyatt might be a genius.  It’s serious business here.  OK, you can make fun of me now…..

Last night after reading our bedtime stories (Goodnight Goon, a Halloween parody of the ever-so-popular Goodnight Moon, and Where the Wild Things Are) Wyatt wanted to read Brooklyn a book.  So I found a baby book, one with just pictures and colors.  Wyatt was pointing to each item, looking up after each thing to be sure Brooklyn was engaged. Yellow duck, red door, green lizard….Brookie! Pay attention! He got to a picture of a sun, he looks at me and goes Sssss, ssss, ssss! Sun starts with S! My jaw about hit the floor.  Mom! Duh, duh, duh DOOR! Door starts with D! And goes with O too! (meaning he picked out the O sound as well) Seriously? Is my three year old sounding out words already?  OK, so he’ll be four in December, but whatever, it’s still pretty young, isn’t it?

I got to school this morning and told his teacher about our bedtime stories the night before.  She said that she was meaning to talk to me because Wyatt has been starting to READ in school.  She goes, No doubt he’ll be reading books before he goes to Kindergarten! BOOKS! BOOKS, PEOPLE! I guess I should’ve seen the little signs that point towards some kind of word recognition. Like the time we were in the Hobby Lobby check out line, and Wyatt looks over to the CLOSED sign on the cashier’s line next to us and says, Mom! That one’s closed! I remember thinking, Well, there’s no possible way he read that so he must just understand that since no one is waiting in that line, it’s closed. Or the time he pointed to the word ONE, and said, Mom! There’s number one! I just figured he saw the actual number one somewhere that I was over looking.

I guess the signs were all there. I just wasn’t reading them.  Maybe a lot of three year olds start showing interest in reading – I wouldn’t know, this is my first time raising a toddler.  (A genius toddler, that is.)  My three-and-a-half year old who, not more than 6 months ago, needed special education, is learning to read. Life is crazy, and wonderful, and scary, and beautiful all at the same time.

And just to be sure I don’t leave Brooklyn out – I’m pretty sure she’s a genius too.  Tonight, she clapped her hands, smiled and blew spit bubbles all at the same time. Wonder-Kids, I tell ‘ya.

I have thought that he has been reading words on the computer for quite a while. He is able to get around those games on the internet too well to not be reading at least some of the key words.
